Michael Flight is a bagpiper based in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, with decades of experience throughout the Americas and Europe.
Michael started his pipe band experience as a member of the St. Andrew's Society of the River Plate Pipe Band (Buenos Aires, Argentina), in 1987 as a tenor drummer, and transitioned to pipes in 1988. He was appointed Pipe Sergeant in 1996, elected Pipe Major in 2000, and again in 2005.
Michael relocated to Texas in 2008 and has since been a piper of the North Texas Caledonian Pipes and Drums, under the direction of P/M Don Shannon. In 2009 Michael was appointed as the Instructor/Pipe Major of the Ballantyne Memorial Pipe Band (NTCPD's grade-5 band).
Michael is the author of the SASRP Pipe Band Highland Bagpipe Tutor (1st Edition in 1997, and revised in 2002), the SASRP Pipe Band Piper’s Handbook (1998) . In 2004, Michael was one of the founding members of the Scottish Pipe Band Association of South America, and became this organization's first President (2015-2023). Michael launched the BagpipeBasics website in 2016, and is one of the organizers of the Remote Solo Competitions (since 2022).
His piping education includes lessons with Bob Worrall, Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, Ann Gray, Ken Eller, Robert Mathieson, Donald McKay, David Hilder, Roddy MacLeod, Craig Munro, Scot Walker and Jim McGillivray; as well as taking lessons at The Piping Centre (Glasgow).
